Dental Exam

Why are dental exams and cleanings essential?

The main question we get is why are dental exams and cleanings so essential? The main reason why it's so important to come regularly to the dentist is it allows you to stay on top of issues and make sure that we prevent them from progressing. Our goal here at Renew Dental is always to try to treat things as early as possible because not only is that going to be the least invasive option but also the least expensive, which most of the time patients like.

What is included in a dental exam?

What is included in a dental exam and cleaning is that during the exam, I'm going to take a look at your full mouth. I am looking at all of the tissues inside the mouth, making sure there's no lumps or bumps that could indicate more serious things like oral cancer or other things needing further investigations. I'm also going to be taking a look at your teeth. The main thing that I'm looking at is the health of all your teeth. I'm taking a look to make sure there's no cavities, looking at existing fillings that you have to make sure that none are breaking down, and looking for any cracks in the teeth that can cause problems in the future. As far as the dental cleaning, that is going to be done with the dental hygienist, where they scale your teeth to remove all the bacteria that's built up since your last visit. Once they've gotten the teeth sufficiently clean, they are going to polish them to remove any stains and then apply a fluoride treatment which helps to prevent new cavities from forming in the future.

What types of recommendations might come from a dental exam?

Patients will ask what type of recommendations might come from my dental exam and that really depends on the individual. We identify any problems that are happening so a recommended treatment plan can be established. This might include the need to do a filling in order to fix a cavity, or discuss making adjustments to your oral hygiene routine. Perhaps we need to start brushing more frequently, or adding in specific products that can help prevent cavities if you are prone to them. It really depends on the individual and we try to customize that to every patient.

How long does a full dental exam take?

Patients will often ask how long will a full dental exam take? Generally, for patients who come in on a routine basis, the most common length is going to be about an hour for us to do the exam and the cleaning. The exam portion is usually fairly short when you are coming on a regular basis because usually there haven't been major changes since last time. The length of time for an exam varies for each patient. If you are someone who forms more build-up and tartar, we may need to book a little bit of a longer appointment. For patients who don't have as much buildup, such as children, a 30 to 40 minute appointment will suffice. We always aim to customize care to the patient and their unique circumstances.

Are dental exams painful?

Some patients express concerns about whether dental exams are painful and luckily, they shouldn't be painful at all. With an exam, most of the time we're just taking a look. Sometimes, if patients are having dental issues, we do have to do some tests for accurate diagnosis that might be a little bit uncomfortable. We would always warn you prior to doing these tests.

How can I schedule a dental exam?

Patients will often ask how they can go about scheduling a dental exam? My best recommendation would be to contact the office, whether that's by phone at (204) 817-6768, or if you like you can always send our office a text or through email. Our reception team will be happy to help you schedule an appointment.

I hope I was able to answer a few of your questions about dental exams. If you have any further questions or you are ready to schedule your own dental exam, give us a call at (204) 817-6768 and we'd be happy to help you.

Dental exams are essential to ensure that you have healthy teeth and gums! Regular dental exams are important to catch problems early on and to maintain good oral health.
