Tooth Cavities at Renew Dental
Hello, I'm Dr. Emma Mutcher here at Renew Dental. We get a lot of questions about tooth cavities. Today I'm going to be talking about tooth cavities to give you a better understanding. We're live.
What is tooth decay?
Tooth decay is caused by bacteria creating acids that take the minerals out of your tooth and create a hole in your tooth.
Is not brushing teeth the only reason for cavities?
Not brushing your teeth can be a cause of cavities, but there can also be a number of other causes such as not flossing, a high sugar diet, low salivation, or dry mouth. A number of conditions such as diabetes, chemotherapy, and radiation can all contribute to tooth decay. There are various risks that can increase the chances of getting tooth decay, including not flossing, a high sugar diet, dry mouth, and other health conditions such as diabetes and head and neck radiation due to cancer. Different factors can increase your chances of getting tooth decay.
How worried should I be about a cavity?
If you're told you have a cavity, it is of concern. You should be aware that the cavity can grow and progress towards the nerve of the tooth, causing a toothache and creating infection within your body.
Is it too late if a cavity hurts?
If a cavity starts hurting, it doesn't necessarily mean it is too late for your tooth. We recommend that you come in for an assessment to see what treatment would be most fitting for that cavity. Treatments like fillings, root canals, or crowns can all be used to treat that cavity. It is important to have it treated sooner rather than later to prevent it from progressing.
How are cavities treated by a dentist?
Cavities can be treated with what's called a filling. We clean out the bacteria in the cavity and then fill that hole with a white material that replicates the natural tooth.
Once a cavity has been filled, can it come back?
A cavity can come back after a filling, just as it would on your natural tooth. However, if you are properly brushing and flossing, that should prevent the return of cavities. A cavity can return even after the tooth has had a filling, similar to how it would with your natural tooth if you're not brushing and flossing at home.
How can I prevent oral cavities?
Oral cavities can be prevented with at-home care such as brushing, flossing, and using fluoridated toothpaste. Regular routine checkups with cleanings and exams also help monitor for any new cavities.
How can I schedule a dental exam and cavity treatment?
You can schedule a dental exam and cavity treatment by giving us a call, text, email, or by walking in to make an appointment in person.
